The Last Month Before the JLPT: A 4-Week Final Plan
One month to go. The most important thing now is not to start new materials, but to turn what you've already studied into points on the test. Here's what to do in each of the last four weeks.
The 4-week plan
| When | What to do |
|---|
| 4 weeks before | Take one full mock test under real time limits. Focus less on the score and more on where you lost points. |
| 3 weeks before | Work on the section where your mock score was lowest. Clear questions from your review list every day. |
| 2 weeks before | Time yourself on reading and settle your pacing. Listen to at least one audio question every day. |
| Final week | Nothing new. Review only your mistakes and confusing grammar and kanji readings. Shift your sleep to match test-day hours. |
What to prioritize by level
- N5・N4: Kanji readings and verb forms (te-form, nai-form, potential, etc.). Once these are solid, grammar and reading questions become much easier.
- N3: Telling similar grammar apart, and pacing in reading. In listening, get used to conversations where the plan changes midway.
- N2: Reading long texts quickly, and formal grammar. Read a little news-style Japanese every day.
Confusing grammar to review
Grammar points that look alike are easy to mix up in the test. Check them once more in the final week. Our grammar guide explains the differences with examples.
The day before and the test day
- The day before, don't try new questions. Just look over your review list and go to bed early.
- Pack everything you need the day before. Check the items and rules in the guide from your local test organizer.
- Arrive early, and listen to a little Japanese audio before the test to warm up your ears.
- Don't get stuck. Pick an answer, move on, and come back if you have time at the end.
