JLPT N4 Grammar

aida / aida ni — while ~ (the whole time) / while ~ (at some point)

Meaning / 意味

Both mean "while", but the second part of the sentence decides which one to use. 〜あいだ: the second action continues for the whole period. 〜あいだに: the second action happens once, at some point during the period.

Notes /

〜うちに (N3) is similar to あいだに but adds "before the situation changes": 若いうちに (while you're still young). It is often used with ない: 暗くならないうちに.
