~에 비해서

Meaning / 意味

〜わりに means the result is different from what you would expect from a certain fact. 「AわりにB」: considering A, B is surprising.

「〜わりに」는 어떤 사실에서 예상되는 것과 결과가 다를 때 씁니다. 「AわりにB」: A인 것에 비해 B는 의외라는 뜻입니다.

1.この店は値段が安いわりに、料理がおいしい。
Considering how cheap this restaurant is, the food is good.
이 가게는 가격이 싼 것에 비해 음식이 맛있다.
2.たくさん勉強したわりに、点数が低かった。
For how much I studied, my score was low.
많이 공부한 것에 비해 점수가 낮았다.
3.祖父は年のわりに元気だ。
My grandfather is energetic for his age.
할아버지는 연세에 비해 건강하시다.
4.有名なわりに、あまり人がいなかった。
Considering how famous it is, there weren't many people.
유명한 것에 비해 사람이 별로 없었다.

The result can be good or bad, but it is always unexpected.
결과는 좋을 수도 나쁠 수도 있지만, 항상 예상과 다릅니다.

〜のに shows disappointment or surprise about a single fact (勉強したのに落ちた). 〜わりに compares with a level you would expect.

「〜のに」는 하나의 사실에 대한 실망이나 놀람을 나타내고(「勉強したのに落ちた」), 「〜わりに」는 예상되는 정도와 비교합니다.
