JLPT N4 Grammar
〜そうだ(様態・伝聞)
sou da — looks like ~ / I heard that ~
~할 것 같다 (양태) / ~라고 한다 (전문)
Meaning / 意味
〜そうだ has two different meanings, and the form before it tells you which one. With the verb stem or adjective stem, it means "it looks like" (based on what you see). With the plain form, it means "I heard that" (passing on information).
「〜そうだ」에는 두 가지 의미가 있고, 앞에 오는 형태로 구별합니다. 동사 「ます」형이나 형용사 어간에 붙으면 '~할 것 같다'(눈으로 보고 판단), 보통형에 붙으면 '~라고 한다'(들은 정보를 전달)입니다.
How to form / 接続
Looks like: Verb ます-stem + そうだ
降ります → 降りそうだ
Looks like: い-adj. (drop い) / な-adj. + そうだ
おいしい → おいしそうだ、元気 → 元気そうだ(いい → よさそうだ)
I heard: plain form + そうだ
降る → 降るそうだ、おいしい → おいしいそうだ、元気だ → 元気だそうだ
Examples / 例文
1.空が暗くなってきました。雨が降りそうです。

Notes / ポイント
"I heard" そうだ often appears with 〜によると or 〜の話では (according to ...).
전문의 「そうだ」는 「〜によると」, 「〜の話では」(~에 따르면)와 자주 함께 씁니다.
Looks-like そうだ is not used for things you can clearly see are true: ×きれいそうな花 (if it's obviously beautiful, say きれいな花).
양태의 「そうだ」는 보면 분명히 알 수 있는 것에는 쓰지 않습니다: 「×きれいそうな花」 (보기에 예쁘면 그냥 「きれいな花」).
Looks-like そうだ conjugates like a な-adjective: おいしそうな料理、雨が降りそうに なる. Heard-that そうだ does not.
양태의 「そうだ」는 「な」형용사처럼 활용합니다: 「おいしそうな料理」. 전문의 「そうだ」는 이렇게 활용하지 않습니다.
〜そうだ(様態・伝聞) vs 〜らしい
〜らしい also means "I heard" or "it seems", but it is a guess based on information, often less direct than そうだ. 降るそうだ = the forecast said so. 降るらしい = it seems so (from what I've heard).
「〜らしい」도 '~라고 한다', '~인 것 같다'라는 뜻이지만, 정보를 바탕으로 한 추측으로 「そうだ」보다 간접적입니다. 「降るそうだ」는 예보에서 그렇게 말했다, 「降るらしい」는 (들은 바로는) 그런 것 같다입니다.
